You Need Quality over Quantity: Here’s Why

Do you really get what you pay for?

We always want more in life, and sometimes it works out in our favor. For instance, knowledge, wealth, freedom and joy are all things everyone appreciates more of.

In most cases, however, more is not necessarily the better option.

For material objects, having a handful of the right items is far more valuable than a bunch of random ones. After all, that’s what minimalism is all about.

Unfortunately, when it comes to quality vs quantity, many people go for the cheaper items in hopes of saving some cash — even people who lead an otherwise minimalist lifestyle.

That’s why we’re writing this post to show you why quality beats quantity. So without any further ado, here are the benefits you’ll experience by investing in quality.

1. Get More Value for Your Money

Let’s start by dispelling a common myth:

Cheap and cost-effective are not the same thing.

When you buy a quality product, you make an investment that will serve you for a long time. For instance, while natural fabrics tend to cost more than synthetic ones, they also tend to last longer. So by paying more for a garment made from natural fabrics, you can get an item that you won’t have to replace in a long time.

Furthermore, by investing in quality, you’re setting yourself up for simpler and more cost-effective maintenance down the line.

Just think about it for a second. Which item are you more likely to take care of? A $15 pair of jeans from a general store or a $150 one from a premium brand?

Of course, the premium one. Why? Because maintenance is a lot simpler when you only have a few products to take care of.

It gets even better. By investing in fewer but higher quality products, you’ll get to buy items that you’ll be proud to own and hence far more likely to wear.

Keeping all that in mind, it’s safe to say that you truly get what you pay for.

2. Save Time and Energy

By giving up on quantity, you’ll naturally set yourself up for sustainable minimalism. That’s because you will have to consider each purchase carefully, as your budget will allow for a few high-quality items only.

In other words, once you switch to quality, you can say goodbye to clutter — and the stress that follows it.

Here’s an interesting fact. Every time you make a decision, you deplete your mind’s ability to make more decisions. This phenomenon is commonly known as decision fatigue.

A great way to reduce decision fatigue is by limiting the number of products in your life. Fewer products mean fewer decisions to make. And as you’ve probably figured out by now, investing in quality can help you fight back against decision fatigue as well — thus saving you both time and energy.

3. Enjoy Conscious Consumption

Have you noticed how some people use shopping to drown their emotions, especially if they’re feeling down?  Perhaps you’ve done that yourself.

Unfortunately, that urge to splurge is scientifically proven as an addiction called retail therapy. If you’re buying things just to feel good and briefly uplift your mood, then you’re already giving in to this addiction.

Luckily, when you switch to a quality-first mindset, you automatically start considering the true value of each purchase. That’s because the only sustainable way to invest in quality is by cutting back on quantity — the very first step.

So by giving preference to quality, you start looking at products from a different lens: does it actually fulfill my life or is it just another source of a shopping high?

That lens is what separates mindless consumption from conscious consumption — or as many call it — the key to a fulfilled life.

4. Reduce Your Environmental Burden

Last but certainly not least is the reduction in environmental burden.

Here’s a simple example to illustrate this point:

A high-quality shirt can last as long as ten cheap generic ones. Perhaps even longer with proper maintenance. As you can imagine, that sustainable shirt is a lot better for the environment than the bundle of cheap ones.

The fewer items you discard, the smaller your environmental footprint gets. Investing in high-quality and sustainable products is the best way to do so.

Start Investing in Quality Today

When we started The Minimalist Wardrobe Shop, many well-wishers told us to focus on affordability. To some extent, their recommendations were valid.

However, as anyone following our blog or Instagram already knows, minimalism and quality go hand in hand. That’s why our focus has been on selling quality products and quality products only — even if that means slightly higher upfront costs.

Our definition of high-quality is products that give a lot of value for what they cost. Things our customers will actually use and get value from for a long time — for example our handpicked list of Must Haves for a minimalist wardrobe.

Embrace a Quality-First Approach in Your Life

While today we’ve mostly focused on a wardrobe only, choosing quality over quantity can serve you well in other areas of life too.

From services to hobbies to the people you surround yourself with — you’ll always get more by choosing quality over quantity.
